Jurnee Smollett said she would play Black Canary again “in a heartbeat.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor discussed her role in Birds of Prey.
“It’s no secret how much I loved playing Black Canary, and [I was] so honored to take on that mantle. I would absolutely do it again if given a chance,” Smollett said.
Smollett recently appeared as the lounge singer with killer vocals in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Right now, it’s unclear if Warner Bros. is planning a sequel to the film, but it’s good to know Smollett would be on board with returning.
The actor also expressed an interest in doing future action films. She particularly wants to work with 87eleven, Chad Stahelski’s action design company responsible for films like the John Wick franchise and Atomic Blonde.
“I love the 87eleven team and Chad. I would love to actually work with Chad, that’s for sure on my bucket list,” Smollett said. “He has such a gift for telling the narrative through these really inventive action sequences.”
Smollett’s new project: Lovecraft Country
Smollett will hit the small screen next in HBO’s Lovecraft Country. The sci-fi/horror dramatic series comes from EP Jordan Peele. In Lovecraft Country, Smollett’s character Leticia joins her friend Atticus (Jonathan Majors) in a cross-country road trip to find Atticus’ missing father. Along the way, they battle both Lovecraftian monsters and the horrors of 1950’s Jim Crow America.
Smollett will further discuss Lovecraft Country during the show’s Comic-Con@Home panel. You can catch the virtual event Saturday, July 25 at 4pm. The series premieres on HBO August 16.
