A new year always brings new seasons of television. But some shows leave their fans waiting longer than a year for new content. In 2025, a ton of series will return after an especially long hiatus.
A combination of industry strikes, long post-production periods to support special effects, filming conflicts, and more can contribute to the lengthy time periods between seasons. This means some shows on this list last aired episodes back in 2022(!). Network: HBO / Max

New season arriving: TBA 2025
What we know: According to HBO, The Last of Us season 2 will take place five years after the events of season 1, when “Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.” Based on casting news and the trajectory of season 1, it seems likely the story will mainly draw from the second installment of the video game franchise.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie. Season 2 will also spotlight a new (to the series) character Dina, played by Isabella Merced. Kaitlyn Dever also joins the cast as Abby, along with Young Mazino as Jesse. We don’t have a name for the character played by Catherine O’Hara yet, but we do have a quick tease of her speaking to Joel. In addition, Jeffrey Wright, who voiced Isaac in The Last of Us Part II video game, will also play the role in the HBO series. More on The Last of Us
