Squid Game was a revelation for Netflix when it released on the streaming service and the show has a second season right around the corner. Now, according to Deadline, Netflix is looking to expand the universe of that show with David Fincher coming on to develop an English-language verson of the series. They’re saying that he could have time for a new movie, but it’s likely that he spends 2025 on this project.

This would mark the first scripted spinoff for Squid Game with the game show Squid Game: The Challenge as the actual first spinoff. That series is also getting a second season. It does make a bit of sense for fans of Fincher and Squid Game. Both have dark themes and tones, similar to his 1997 movie The Game. Fincher has a deal with Netflix that has given us shows like Mindhunter and The Killer.

Expanding their IP library has been Netflix’s big move since they started up in streaming. They want their own controllable IPs like Stranger Things. The second season of the series debuts on Netflix on December 26th, 2024. It has already been renewed for a third and final season.

Squid Game still ranks as the most popular Netflix series since its massive breakout in 2021. It won six Primetime Emmy Awards among its 14 nominations.
