Netflix has dropped a lot of eggs in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, by not only greenlighting an anime series, but also a prequel film. That film is aptly titled Army of Thieves, and is directed by the fan-favorite safe cracker Dieter himself, Matthias Schweighöfer. The prequel follows:
small-town bank teller Dieter who gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.
As well as Schweighöfer, the film also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Jonathan Cohen, and Noémie Nakai. Army of Thieves is written by Shay Hatten with a story by Hatten and Zack Snyder.
HERE IS YOUR FIRST LOOK AT ARMY OF THIEVES:
I was a pretty big fan of Snyder’s Army of the Dead, although I can definitely admit that it had its issues. But, I think we can all agree that Matthias Schweighöfer’s Dieter was one of the best parts of the original film. It will be really fun to see this character have a more grounded, spin-off adventure. I must say that it would be awesome to see Omari Hardwicke’s Vanderohe make an appearance, but unfortunately this is a prequel, so that’s probably out of the question. Even so, the cast for this looks awesome and I’m looking forward to them expanding this world.
Army of Thieves will premiere on Netflix, sometime in Fall 2021.
