It has been a long and winding road, but production is officially underway for the final episodes of Yellowstone. The first half of the season originally aired in November 2022, ending in January 2023. Production on the second half of Season 5 was delayed due to a myriad of factors. Not the least of which was the writers’ and actors’ strike that halted most Hollywood projects. In addition to the strikes, the reported desire of series star Kevin Costner to exit the show is also believed to be a cause for delays. The remainder of Season 5 is currently expected to be 6 episodes and will premiere in November on Paramount Network.
THE FUTURE OF YELLOWSTONE
Very little information is known about the final episodes of the series. It is also unclear if Costner will be making an appearance at all. Earlier this year, while promoting his new film Horizon: An American Saga, the actor told Entertainment Tonight:
I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to … I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it
The appears to be some hope that Costner will return, but at this point, it’s anyone’s guess.
While the original series will be ending, it is certainly not the end of the Yellowstone universe. The prequel series, 1923 has already aired its first season and will be returning for a second. Paramount has also ordered two additional series, 1944 and 2024. At this time, no additional details have been released about either series. However, 2024 will be a contemporary series and will reportedly feature a new cast with some crossover characters from the original series. Previous reports have linked Matthew McConaughey to the series, but there have been no official announcements on casting.
