The box office saw Killers of the Flower Moon make close to its projected earnings, but it still wasn’t enough to ward off Taylor Swift and The Eras Tour.
Respectable Opening For Killers of the Flower Moon At The Box Office
As per Box Office Mojo, Killers of the Flower Moon made $23 million on a $200 million budget, Quite impressive for a movie nearly three-and-a-half hours long. We’ve seen some longer movies have success at the box office this year, most notably Oppenheimer. Still, considering that Paramount and Apple TV couldn’t promote the movie with any of its principal cast is quite impressive. Although you can easily run rampant with the potential that this could’ve easily been higher had the cast been able to promote the movie.
First place was Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour. I said this last week but this movie defied many norms in terms of theatrical marketing and distribution. Even if you’ve seen the movie, most theaters encourage people to get up and dance and sing. A far departure from the standard movie-going practice. Still, it’s resonating with fans with $31 million at the weekend box office.
A Thirty-Year-Old Movie Re-Emerges
The Exorcist: Believer took the third place spot with $5.6 million. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie was fourth with $4.5 million.
However, it was the surprising fifth-place movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The movie got a re-release to celebrate its 30th anniversary and it made a respectable $4.1 million. Considering this is a movie already available on Disney+ and has likely been viewed by many on home video. It’s impressive that the movie was able to do so well.
Will Five Nights at Freddy’s Scare Away The Box Office?
The major release next week is Five Nights at Freddy’s. It’s projected to earn $40 million. A high number and would be the second-highest debut of the season behind (you guessed it) The Eras Tour.
This is possible however as the movie skews towards male audiences and is a known property being adapted. Women and girls have had the theatres to themselves lately with The Eras Tour but it could be time for male audiences to re-emerge.
Even if the movie fails to meet its target, a day-and-date release with Peacock may do that. It likely will still put it in the $30 million range which could be enough to put it in the first place spot. Halloween Ends also had a day-and-date release with Peacock and it came in $10 million below projected amounts. So don’t be surprised if Five Nights at Freddy’s also sees a similar loss in box office revenue.
As always, we’ll check in next week to see how it all goes.
