It’s Labor Day weekend and for some, the unofficial end of summer. While there will be plenty of BBQs and other outdoor activities to keep everyone busy there is still plenty to watch in between those beers and burgers. So without further ado, welcome to this week’s installment of That Hashtag Show’s What To Watch, a viewing guide for new releases from this week and the upcoming weekend. I will attempt to hit all of the major new releases across theatres, television, and streaming. But of course, if I’ve missed something, please let me know in the comments. Also, be sure to let us know what you are watching this weekend in the comments or on social media.

THE EQUALIZER 3

Denzel Washington returns for the final chapter in the Equalizer trilogy. Washington stars as Robert McCall, the ex-government assassin who finds himself once again protecting the innocent. Antoine Fuqua, who directed the first two Equalizer films is also back as the director. Our THS review found the Equalizer 3 to be a fitting end to the franchise and a fun surprise to end the summer.

Seeing Washington have this much fun while committing violent killing sprees makes me wish there was still one more film in the barrel. But seeing Washington’s McCall finally able to relax and enjoy his golden years makes The Equalizer 3 one of the biggest, most fun surprises of the summer.

JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL

The final episode of the 8-episode revival of Justified was released on Wednesday, August 30 on Hulu. The extended holiday weekend is a perfect time to stream the series. City Primeval does well to balance familiar and fresh, not simply rehashing the same type of series the original Justified was. Besides the obvious location change from Kentucky to Detroit, the series understands the world has changed around Raylan over the last decade.

What to Watch; Justified

Where’s it streaming?: Hulu on August 30 (All 8 episodes now available)

What’s it about?: Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind.

A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell’s attorney, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well. These three characters set out on a collision course in classic Elmore Leonard fashion, to see who makes it out of the City Primeval alive.

DISENCHANTMENT SEASON 5

The fifth and final season of the fantasy animated series from Simpsons creator Matt Groening hits Netflix on September 1st.

Where’s it streaming?: Netflix on September 1

What’s it about?: Disenchantment follows the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and personal demon Luci. The oddball trio encounters the likes of ogres, sprites, imps, trolls, and human fools along the way

HYPNOTIC

Originally hitting theaters back in May 2023, Hypnotic is the latest film from director Robert Rodriguez, who also co-wrote the film. The film stars Ben Affleck, Alice Braga, J. D. Pardo, Hala Finley, Dayo Okeniyi, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley, and William Fichtner. Our THS review from when the film was released in May praised the performances by Affleck and Fichtner,

Ben Affleck is excellent throughout. He plays the sort of everyman put into a crazy situation well. It feels a lot like a throwback to action/thriller stars of the past

William Fichtner is pitch-perfect in his role as Dellrayne. There are some subtle things that Fichtner adds to this performance. He plays a wicked hypnotist that makes people do some pretty messed up things to get what he wants.

What to Watch

Where’s it streaming?: Peacock on September 1

What’s it about?: Determined to find his missing daughter, Detective Danny Rourke finds himself spiraling down a rabbit hole while investigating a series of reality-bending crimes. Aided by Diana Cruz, a gifted psychic, Rourke simultaneously pursues and is pursued by a lethal specter, the one man he believes holds the key to finding the girl.
