Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is the new delightful and heartwarming film from Dreamworks. The story follows Ruby (Lana Condor), a 16-year-old girl who lives in a small town on the coast. Ruby has always felt like she doesn’t quite fit in and her mother’s about now being allowed to go in the ocean ruins everything – including Prom.
After ignoring the rule and diving into the ocean to save her crush, Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), she activates her Kraken powers. This opens up the proverbial Davy Jones’s Locker creating chaos that she could never imagine.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is full of humor and heart
I found Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken to be super fun, full of humor, adventure, and heart. The story wastes no time setting up the story, and conflicts with tons of humor. I love all the characters, especially Ruby’s friend Bliss (Ramona Young), the goth-inspired friend obsessed with death and tragedy.
The film is a story about friendship, family, and finding your place in the world. It’s a story that will resonate with viewers of all ages. While Ruby’s coming-of-age story isn’t an original one I really enjoy the sea creature spin. Watching Ruby learn to embrace what makes her unique and figure out how to make a difference in the world is both heartwarming and empowering.
I really enjoyed the character design for the multiple creatures, as well as the eye-popping color pallet under the sea. The voice talent is also top-notch! Toni Collette (Mafia Mama), Academy Award Winner Jane Fonda, Colman Domingo (Zola), Liza Koshy, Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), and more lend their spectacular vocal talents to the film.
If you’re looking for a fun, feel-good movie to watch I highly recommend Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. You can catch the film in theaters on June 30, 2023!
