It looks like we are finally getting to know when we will get to see Suzume in theaters here in NA. Not to mention globally in every nation that wants to see Makoto Shinkai’s latest anime film masterpiece. Don’t believe me? Then why not check out the new trailer for yourself below?

The Bell Tolls for Us at Long Last!

Finally, we get to find out just what’s up with those mysterious doors.

Crunchyroll is proud to announce the theatrical release dates for Suzume with that official trailer above on YouTube. Right at the end of the trailer, it reveals that we here in the US and Canada will get to see Makoto Shinkai’s latest entry in his anime film masterpiece list on April 14, 2023. As of this writing, that’s a little over 4 months away. So it’s still a bit of a wait, but not long at all.

April 14 isn’t just the theatrical release date for NA though. In addition to the US and Canada, Suzume will also make its theatrical premiere in Austria, Belgium, Gibraltar, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom on that date. That said though, it seems like the rest of the world is going to see this anime film earlier than on that date. Are you interested in the full list of when and where this anime film is going to screen? Then you can check out the full list from Crunchyroll below:

  • April 12 in France and Malta
  • April 13 in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, and New Zealand
  • Additional 2023 dates to be announced for additional Latin America and EMEA territories

Unfortunately, there’s still no way to pre-purchase tickets for Suzume as of this writing. That’s something we will have to wait for at a later date. Tune back into THS later to find out where to get those tickets when we do.

Suzume: Synopsis

"Suzume" NA key art.
If the key art is this pretty, then you can bet the anime film itself will be even prettier.

Want to have an idea of what Suzume is about before you see it in theaters? Well, Crunchyroll has an official synopsis for us that teases at the plot of this anime film. You can check it out below:

On the other side of the door, was time in its entirety—

Suzume no Tojimari is a coming-of-age story for the 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where she must close the doors causing devastation.

Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly drawn by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob… Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

—The stars, then sunset, and the morning sky.

Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky…

Never-before-seen scenery, encounters and farewells… A myriad of challenges await her on her journey. Despite all the obstacles in her way, Suzume’s adventure shines a ray of hope upon our own struggles against the toughest roads of anxiety and constraints that make up everyday life. This story of closing doors that connect our past to the present and future will leave a lasting impression upon all of our hearts.

Drawn in by these mysterious doors, Suzume’s journey is about to begin.
