Do you all remember that mysterious 15-second teaser video Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm revealed yesterday on Twitter? Well, as it turns out, they’re finally revealing what it is today. And as it also turns out, it’s not only a Star Wars anime short, but an anime short for The Mandalorian as well.

Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies: Details

"Zen - Grogu and Dust Bunnies" key art.
Ah, those little soot sprites. We meet again.

Disney is officially announcing Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies to be the mystery collaboration project that Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm had been teasing us about yesterday, Apparently, this will be an anime short celebrating the 3rd anniversary of The Mandalorian back on November 12, 2019. And by the beloved animation studio that brought us Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Spirited Away to boot.

In fact, speaking of My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, fans of those Studio Ghibli anime films will recognize the “dust bunnies” in the key art above. Originally, Ghibli called them “susuwatari“, which translates to “wandering soot”. However, translators over the years have translated it more figuratively as “black soots”, “soot sprites”, and “dust bunnies”. Hence, why Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies has the title it does. It’ll be interesting to see how Baby Yoda interacts with these soot sprites. Knowing the little glutton, he’ll probably try to eat them, but I don’t think he’ll try more than once. After all, they are just soot. They’re not going to be tasty enough for him to continue eating them. Not like sapient frog eggs.

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to see how many soot sprites/dust bunnies Grogu will eat before he decides they’re not worth the effort. Disney reveals in this announcement that Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies will make its grand debut on tomorrow on November 19, 2022. Of course, this Studio Ghibli x Lucasfilm anime short will be a Disney+ exclusive. If you want to watch Studio Ghibli’s take on Star Wars for yourself, then you’ll have to pay for a Disney+ subscription. However, this is Studio Ghibli we’re talking about here. It will very likely be worth the money.
