Disney is continuing their trend of making theme park rides into feature films with Big Thunder Mountain. Deadline is reporting that Disney is making a movie based on the attraction and that directing duo Bert & Bertie (Hawkeye) are in negotiations to direct the film.
The ride itself is based in the gold rush era of the United States. It’s a mine cart ride set in a mining town where gold is discovered. The ride first opened in 1979 in Disneyland. The roller coaster then went to Orlando at Disneyworld and showed up at Disneyland Tokyo and Paris. There are no plot details available at this time. We can guess that it’ll have a similar tone to the adventuring Jungle Cruise or the swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean. Disney is also doing a movie based on the Haunted Mansion that’s due next year.
Bert & Bertie directed a majority of the episodes for Hawkeye and apparently impressed Disney enough to give them the reins for this movie. They’ve also directed episodes of Our Flag Means Death. We’ll have to see how the film turns out, but if it’s anything like Disney’s other theme park ride movies, it’s sure to be fun.
