Over the last several years, Star Wars fans have been treated to returns of numerous characters. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), Max Reebo, and others from the original and prequel trilogies have made their way into films and Disney+ series’. Ewan McGregor’s return as Obi-Wan Kenobi is now the latest to join that list with his upcoming series. One character forever tied to Obi-Wan and the prequel trilogy is of course Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson). Fans have long hoped to see the actor step back into the Jedi robes of Qui-Gon Jinn. Thanks to a recent interview, it sounds like Neeson agrees with the fans.

OPEN TO RETURN AS QUI-GON JINN

If fans are treated to a future return of Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn, it won’t be the first time the actor has reprised the role. Following his appearance in The Phantom Menance, Neeson provided the voice for Qui-Gon in The Clone Wars animated series. Qui-Gon appeared as visions to Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker while on the planet Mortis and later as a voice to guide Yoda. Helping Yoda learn how to retain his identity through the Force after death. A key moment in Star Wars canon and an item I will touch on further in regards to where Qui-Gon might return.

When asked in an interview on ComicBook.com about a possible return as Qui-Gon, Neeson had this to say:

“Oh, I think so, yeah, yeah, yeah, I think so … if it was a film. Yeah, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to TV, I must admit, I just like the big screen, you know? Qui-Gon, I can’t believe it’s 24 years since we made [Star Wars:The Phantom Menace, I just cannot believe where the time has gone. It was a terrific experience, shooting that film in London.”

WILL QUI-GON JINN RETURN IN OBI-WAN?

We know that Qui-Gon had achieved a way to retain his identity after death and is an important figure in Obi-Wan’s life. It would seem a natural fit to have Qui-Gon make a return in some manner in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+. The return of Qui-Gon has been teased since the conclusion of Revenge of The Sith when Obi-Wan and Yoda had this exchange.

Yoda: “In your solitude on Tatooine, the training I have for you.”
ObiWan: “Training?”
Yoda: “An old friend has been the path to immortality. One who has returned from the netherworld of the Force, your old master.”
ObiWan: “Qui-Gon?”
Yoda: “How to commune with him, I will teach you…”

Obi-Wan Kenobi will take part, at last in some capacity, on Tatooine, where the Jedi master has gone into hiding. Knowing that part of the training for Obi-Wan was to commune with his former master, it’s not a huge leap to think we might see (or hear) from Qui-Gon. It was also Qui-Gon who first brought Anakin to the Jedi Council, and it was his death that forced Kenobi to take over the training, I’m sure the departed Jedi might have some things to say. But with the comments of Neeson regarding preferring film over TV, that might be less of a possibility. Of course, these comments could be a bit of misdirection on the part of the actor. The teaser image of Obi-Wan in a cave could be a great time for communing with the Force and Qui-Gon.
