There’s nothing scarier than becoming your mother.

And Sandra Oh will take that fear to the extreme in the new supernatural thriller Umma

Umma – which means “mother” in Korean – follows Amanda (Oh) and her daughter (Fivel Stewart) living a quiet life on an American farm. But when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda becomes haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother.

I have to say, every so often you come across a movie or show that just caters so directly to your interests, you feel like someone took a deep-dive into your brain to create something just for you. That’s how I feel about Umma, just from this trailer. A supernatural thriller, one of my favorite genres? Produced by Sam Raimi, one of my favorite filmmakers? Starring Sandra Oh, one of my all-time favorite actors? Get out of my brain! (But actually don’t. Feel free to keep making content precisely for my interests.)

On top of all that, I’ve always liked some nuance with my horror. While Umma looks like it’s going to deliver on the supernatural thrills front, it also clearly has a strong emotional core. If this one hits us with the jump scares and also makes us cry, I won’t be surprised.

Umma comes from writer and director Iris K. Shim. In addition to Oh and Stewart, the film stars MeeWha Alana Lee, Tom Yi, Odeya Rush, and Dermot Mulroney. It is produced by Sony Pictures.

Umma premieres in theaters March 18.

So, what did you think of the trailer? Does the promise of Sandra Oh leading a supernatural thriller that’s really about family also have you counting down to March 18? Let me know in the comments below.
