Casting news for Kraven the Hunter has been in full swing. We already know Aaron Taylor Johnson will be playing the antihero Kraven, joined by Russell Crowe and also Fred Hechinger. Today we learned through an exclusive report over at Deadline, Ariana DeBose will also be joining the cast. The exact role is unconfirmed at this time, but it’s believed to be Calypso.
DeBOSE ON A HOT STREAK
DeBose has been on a hot streak after her casting as Anita in West Side Story. Which earned the actress a SAG Award for Supporting Actress. DeBose has also earned Oscar, BAFTA, and Critics Choice nominations for her role. Audiences will next see DeBose in the action film Argylle by director Matthew Vaughn. The film will see her star alongside Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dua Lipa.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE FILM
The film will be directed by J.C. Chandor, who most recently directed the 2019 Netflix film, Triple Frontier. Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk have written the screenplay. Marcum & Holloway previously wrote the screenplay for Iron Man and another Sony Spider-Man Universe film, Moribus. So are no strangers to comic book films. Previous credits for Wenk include the two Equalizer films and also The Magnificent Seven (2016). Kraven the Hunter has targeted a January 13, 2023 release date.
Kraven is one of several films in development as part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Morbius, which features another one-time enemy of Spider-Man, is set to release in April of this year. Madame Web also appears to be progressing with Dakota Johnson in talks to start. Along with two previous Venom films, Sony looks to be rapidly expanding its slate of comic book films.
