Mel Gibson could be directing the fifth installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise. Over the weekend at an Experience With… event in London, Gibson let it slip that he’s directing Lethal Weapon 5. Here’s his quote from the event:

The man who directed all the Lethal films, Richard Donner, he was a big guy. He was developing the screenplay and he got pretty far along with it. And he said to me one day, ‘Listen kid, if I kick the bucket you will do it.’ And I said: ‘Shut up.’ But he did indeed pass away. He did ask me to do it and at the time I didn’t say anything. He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So I will be directing the fifth one.

Richard Donner sadly passed away earlier this year. He was hard at work on the fifth movie and it’s been stuck in neutral since his death. Richard Wenk (The Equalizer reboot) wrote the most recent screenplay. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are both returning for the film, but other than that, and some quotes from Danny Glover from last year about the tone of the film, we don’t know much.

The directorial change was blessed and brought on by Lauren Shuler Donner, the wife of Richard Donner.

The last film in the franchise was Lethal Weapon 4, which came out in 1998. Since then, there was the Fox TV show, Lethal Weapon.
