Adi Shankar was the driving force behind the very popular Castlevania anime for Netflix, and now it seems he will be using that talent for an animated adaptation of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

Adi Shankar himself.
From vampires to battle royales. Truly a man of many talents.

On July 23, 2021; Collider reported that Adi Shankar has embarked on a new project: a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds animated series. Yes, you heard that right. PUBG is going to be an animated show. With the creative force behind Castlevania creating and showrunning the whole thing.

Adi Shankar isn’t alone in this project though. In fact, Krafton Inc., the South Korea owners of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, tapped him for this series. CH Kim, the CEO of Krafton Inc., even mentions that this is part of a “broader strategy of expanding the PUBG Universe into a multimedia franchise”. As for Shankar himself, well, excited doesn’t even begin to describe him. In fact, here are his own words on the subject:

As a player, I’ve been crushing the competition in the Battlegrounds since PUBG released in 2017. I’m grateful to KRAFTON for the trust and confidence they’ve placed in me to execute my vision as a filmmaker and I’m excited to embark on this journey together. To me, this animated project represents another step in the evolution of mending the torched bridge between the games industry and Hollywood. I look forward to revealing to everybody what winning a chicken dinner looks like.

Adi Shankar: A Second Video Game Success?

PUBG logo and cover art.
Although I’m not sure how you could make a show off of this.

Films and TV shows based off of video games have an alarming tendency to not go well. All we need to do is look at the recent Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time films, not to mention that old Super Mario Bros. film, to see how very easily it can all go wrong. Fortunately, we have Adi Shankar on the job here.

Love the old school references in this trailer.

Castlevania is not only one of the best anime-style shows we have ever seen, but it’s also surprisingly faithful to the original Konami games. With this under Adi Shankar’s belt, I have a lot of faith in this guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if this animated PUBG adaptation becomes the next big hit because of that.

Conclusion

The award-winning PUBG video game is getting an animated adaptation. Adi Shankar of Netflix‘s Castlevania fame will be the creator and showrunner, thanks to Krafton Inc.. Due to that past success, I have a lot of confidence in this show. And who knows? It might even be an anime-style show to boot.
