Jack Boniface, aka Shadowman, is on a mission to discover why the veil between humanity’s world and the alternate dimension known as the Deadside is tearing apart. As portals appear all over the globe, Jack will use the power of the shadow Loa passed down through his lineage to stop the monstrous threats emerging from the Deadside.

Shadowman #2 Review

Shadowman continues with issue #2, which sees Jack and Baron Samedi hit the road to track down other thin spots in the Veil.

I didn’t expect the series to move out of New Orleans so quickly! But this ghostly wild west chapter proves Shadowman will be the kind of series that shakes things up. Shadowman finds himself in the town of Enoch, Arizona: a place teetering uncomfortably between both sides of the Veil.

One of the things I love about Shadowman is the way the series really blends both the plot and the visuals together in a way that makes the story more immersive. It’s a cool plot idea to say the town exists in different spaces for both the living and the dead, but it’s another thing to use that fun plot point as a way to develop your lead character AND make the comic more visually interesting. Plenty of comics have great plots and great art, but the best of them know how to bring the elements together in a complementary way. Shadowman is definitely up there with the best of them!

This issue also explores more of the dynamic between Shadowman and Baron Samedi, the Loa of the Dead. You can tell things will get complicated, because Jack both relies on but can’t really trust Samedi. It’s not a friendship so much as a wary partnership, where the terms of the agreement might change at any moment. The setup will keep readers on their toes, wondering about Samedi’s true motives.

And of course, there’s also a truly grotesque monster to be fought. The demonic character design for this series horrifies (in the best way, of course). You get plenty of dead bodies, ghouls, and bloody action to keep you entertained. Plus, the issue maintains just the right hint of mystery to keep you invested in the long term. Who is that woman following Jack? What does she want? And what’s the next stop on Shadowman’s quest to hold back the threats from beyond the Veil? You’ll have to tune in for the next issue to find out!
