Has anyone ever heard of the Mech Cadet comic book series from BOOM! Studios? Well, if you haven’t, it’s a good time now to get familiar with it, courtesy of Netflix.

Getting some Big Hero 6 vibes, but with giant robots.

Netflix officially announces on May 20, 2021 that they are making a 3D animated adaptation of Mech Cadets. This will be an adaptation of the original Boom! Studios comic book series by writer Greg Pak and artist Takeshi Miyazawa. Speaking of which, Boom! Studios will serve as the animated series’ executive producer, alongside Japanese studio Polygon Pictures, Inc. (Tron: Uprising, Ajin: Demi-Human, Transformers Prime). Aaron Lam will also serve as the writer and an executive producer to the series.

It is important for us to create stories that exemplify our teams’ diverse voices and art as a studio based in Tokyo, Japan. As part of our mission “to do what no other has done, in unparalleled quality, for all the world to see and enjoy” we are ecstatic to have alongside with us, our supervising director, Tohru Patrick Awa, writer and executive producer, Aaron Lam and our talented diverse team of writers, to visualize the wonderful story created by Greg Pak, Takeshi Miyazawa and Boom! Studios. We all are honored to work with Netflix, and to tell a story that we hope will inspire future storytellers around the world.

Unfortunately, that’s all Netflix has for us for Mech Cadets today. We have no cast details, and we don’t even have a release date. We’ll just have to wait for more official news from Netflix later.

The cover for the original comic book. I actually kinda like the look of the characters here more.

So what is Mech Cadets about? Well, in addition to the little snippets of info above, Netflix also gives us a logline for the series. It goes something like this:

Fifty years in the future, after a terrifying alien species attacked our planet, teenager Stanford Yu works as a janitor at the Sky Corps Military Academy. But he’s only dreamed of one thing his entire life — to pilot a Robo Mech, giant robots from outer-space who came to our aid. When he finally gets his shot, Stanford and his classmates must put aside all personal differences and work together as a team in order to defend humanity against a new invasion of aliens.

Yep, our hero in Mech Cadets is literally an Almighty Janitor. This should be fun. Especially watching an untrained civilian flail around in a giant robot for a while.

Conclusion

Mech Cadets is getting a 3D animated adaptation from Netflix, based on the original comic book from Boom! Studios. Unfortunately, that’s basically all we have for you today. No release date or anything. We’ll just have to wait for Netflix to release more details later.
