River Horse Games makes games for blockbuster movies

I am sure everyone knows about gaming companies like Hasbro, White Wizard, Milton Bradley, and the like, but have you heard of a little company called River Horse Games? Probably not, but its a company you might want to familiarize yourself with. For 10 years this little game design company has made games. While they may not be on everyone’s lips their gaming titles are among the top movie licenses in existence! River Horse just announced it will be adding to their stable with a Dark Crystal RPG coming later this year.

River Horse is a company few of heard of, but if you check out their web page. You will find movie titles such as Highlander, Terminator, Hunger Games, Pacific Rim and more. They already have a Dark Crystal and Labyrinth board game, and within the past few months began their foray into the RPG world with a Labyrinth RPG book.

The forth-coming Dark Crystal book takes place around the events of both the movie and the Netflix series, and should follow the lay out of the Labyrinth RPG. It will contain 100 scenes to journey through, lasting for 200 pages. The book will also contain a map of Thra, extended fold-out pages and transparency overlays. The Labyrinth RPG also contained two specialized 6-sided dice that rest in page cut outs within the book. There is no word yet if the Dark Crystal RPG will contain the two D6s.

Okay Dark Crystal Lovers, just go out grab four or five of your friends and spend hundreds of hours on the campaign just like you would with D&D. Not so fast. Assuming the Dark Crystal book mirrors the Labyrinth RPG, these RPGs read in language for the common person. Not only that, they can be run with merely 2 people. The game can support as many as 6 comfortably, so adapt it to the people you have. If a person wants they could even create and manage more than one character.

The Labyrinth book spends its opening pages walking players through game management and character creation. Every aspect of gameplay is managed through the two D6s included, so you do not need ten different dice to play (although experienced games could adapt it if they chose. The pages needed for character creation are also included in the book, but to keep the books in best shape you can also print them out from River Horse’s website.

With games like this only one tool is needed – Imagination! Although, if a friend or member of the party lacks imagination that can be worked into the story as well with a good GM (game manager). The rules are what you make of them and the outcomes are what the dice make of them, so do not think of any idea as too obvious or too hard. The more players know the world of Thra the richer and larger the game can become.

The Dark Crystal RPG releases sometime this year in 2021.

THRA AWAITS!
