Pitch Black and Flash Gordon: Launching an Era

Flash Gordon began as a comic strip back in 1934 and ran until 1992. It inspired science fiction creators for decades, and it can be argued it peaked in the mind of George Lucas and the creation of Star Wars. The popularity of Star Wars then paid back the creative debt by inspiring this classic 1980 movie version. It failed here in the states, but when Queen does your soundtrack you WILL gain cult status. Gain cult status it did, and thrived for the decades that followed.

Pitch Black most notably launched the career of a young action star named Vin Diesel. Riddick is a captive being transported to prison. When a comet hits the ship, it crashes on a hostile planet. While Riddick spends little effort taking out some of the crew, everyone realizes they must team up to get off the planet. The cult hit would spawn a couple sequels, and will no doubt spawn another if Diesel needs a project to work on.
