Lethal Weapon

Lethal Weapon was an action series that was based around the dynamic between two officers. Two officers, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, who are from very different backgrounds. Danny Glover, has apparently read the script for Lethal Weapon 5. We reported earlier this year that Lethal Weapon 5 was indeed on it’s way. In an interview with Variety, Glover shared his thoughts on the new script.

Here’s what he had to say:

I don’t want to give away the plot on the script that I read, but I found the plot had very strong relevance to some of things that are happening today. I can say that. But that was in January. History changes so fast… But yes, there’s been talk about it. There is something of a plan.

I can only tell you, if it does happen, there is something extraordinary in it. If Lethal Weapon gives us some sort of contribution to understanding a little bit more… It would be interesting to do. It would be interesting to see how we take this within the political framework we are in; the economic framework that we are in. Especially that framework as opposed to the communities that have been affected by the kind of police violence, the kind of police standards, and the power that they exert as well. And what would be interesting from that vantage point is what that attempt could be like at this particular moment. And maybe it will attempt to confront the issue head-on, within whatever script comes out.

What Does This Mean For Lethal Weapon 5?

Danny Glover’s comments could spell that Lethal Weapon 5 is a much more personal film than the previous ones. The first film tackled issues of family, drugs, prostitution, and crime. The second was about race and the issues of Apartheid in the world at the time. After that the third and fourth film were more straightforward action-comedy films, so the issues took a backseat. A return to the grittiness and harder subject matter could be what the doctor ordered for the fifth and final film.

In our original piece, it was reported that Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, and Richard Donner would all return for the new film. That news hasn’t changed, and it’s promising that a script is ready for the actors to read. The original Lethal Weapon is one of my favorite films ever, and one of the reasons I got interested in film. So seeing one last ride from the trio would be a perfect cap to the franchise. If only they could get Shane Black on board somehow with the film that launched his career to the stratosphere.
