Jim Henson enthralled audiences when he introduced us to The Dark Crystal in 1982. Never before had movie-goers experienced anything of such mystic proportions. As a result, fans enamored with the film have embraced its story for decades. Now, we can gleefully return to Thra with the Netflix original series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
“The Dark Crystal does mean a lot to so many people. It is a rare film that has an entirely original fantasy world. That’s one of the reasons we wanted to go back there,” says Lisa Henson, the show’s Executive Producer. She does so in a visually stunning and informative behind-the-scenes featurette that you can watch above.
Return to Thra with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
“The world of Thra is dying,” the show’s official description tells us. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance shows us just what happened in the idyllic fantasy world of Thra that led to the events of the original film:
The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.”
Director Louis Leterrier helms the production, with co-executive producer Jeffrey Addis adding his writing talents. Utilizing practical effects in the style of the original, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance promises to be an extraordinary journey back to the world many of us fell in love with so many years ago.
“They want an odyssey, they want a saga,” said actor Taron Egerton of The Dark Crystal fans. (He portrays the Gelfling Rian in the series.) “They want something to enrich the universe of the original film, and that’s what this series does.”
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance premiers on Netflix Friday, August 30th. For more information on the series, please visit its official site at netflix.com/thedarkcrystal.
