Ziggler Vs A Hall Of Famer?
Dolph Ziggler is reportedly going to wrestle WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg at SummerSlam.
Earlier this week a match was set-up between Ziggler and The Miz. However, Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer reported that The Miz match is a misdirect for the surprise Goldberg match.
Ziggler has been trashing Goldberg on TV and it appears Goldberg’s name has been brought up for a reason. However, it is a weird chose to set-up this misdirect with a Miz match. It is also weird to have a match announced week of the PPV. Another possibility is Miz will be jumped backstage and Goldberg will take his place.
Why Such A Late Match Set-Up
I personally think this is the wrong way to go about making this match. Ziggler vs Miz is a match fans have seen a million times and could be a bathroom break match, but Ziggler vs Goldberg is something new. A better set-up would be having Goldberg coming out and spearing and Jackhammering Ziggler and grabs a mic and says “Dolph’s next” and leaves the ring. A huge hype train going into SummerSlam follows Goldberg’s exit.
The last time we saw Goldberg, was in his match against The Undertaker at Super ShowDown where he knocked himself out. That match was an absolute disaster to the surprise of no one.
Ziggler Can Guide Goldberg Through A Good Match
However, Goldberg wrestling Ziggler is a much better matchup. Ziggler is younger and still in his prime. He has been a middle-of-the-road wrestler for a long time, but he is a solid performer. Dolph knows his way around a wrestling ring and can guide Goldberg through a good match.
The reason Goldberg matches have been so bad in WWE is because Goldberg can’t lead a match. Therefore Goldberg needs someone who can guide him through it. The Undertaker can guide people through matches, but he can’t teach people how to lift him up into a Jackhammer mid-match.
Goldberg needs to wrestle a lighter guy, but they shouldn’t be a cruiserweight. I think Ziggler is a good choice to fill that spot. If this match actually happens, it won’t be a disaster, but my hopes aren’t high for it either.
Why Not Other WWE Legends And Hall Of Famers?
If WWE really wants to have HOF wrestlers or legends wrestle then a better approach is a match like Trish Stratus vs Charlotte Flair. Personally I would love to see other male legends take this periodic wrestling schedule instead of Goldberg.
Here are a few awesome match-ups which would be amazing matches. How about Lance Storm vs Seth Rollins or Chavo Guerrero vs Andrade Cien Almas? Goldberg is really overrated and always has been. However, even when WWE puts him in a match with the Undertaker he still messes it up.
We will see if they set-up this match at all on this upcoming week’s TV. It is just so late to set-up a match. However, it can be done and it could be amazing and make perfect sense. It will be interesting to see how WWE does it or if it happens at all.
This year’s SummerSlam will take place at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Sunday August 11.
