Avengers: Endgame completes the journey started 11 years ago with 2008’s Iron Man.  It finally brings to life the things fans have been waiting over a decade to see.  There are big laughs, huge cheers, and many tearful moments.

Like the final filmed cameo of Stan Lee it contains, Avengers: Endgame is an emotional look back at what has come before.  The film rewards the dedicated fans who built this cinematic universe with both familiar scenes and faces.  Some things, like the movie’s climactic battle are expected.  Other things, like the fate of certain characters have been guessed at.  But Endgame also contains scenes fans have dreamed of but never believed they would see.  Those scenes are the surprise gift the filmmakers have given to the audience and make them believe anything is possible.  A few years ago, a cinematic Avengers and X-Men crossover seemed a far-away fantasy.  Now, it’s as inevitable as the next iPhone.  Good things come to those who wait.

Avengers: Endgame is not just the twenty-second film in the Marvel cinematic universe, it is the culmination of an 11-year journey.  When Samuel L. Jackson walked out of the shadows as Nick Fury in the first Iron Man movie, no one could guess the cinematic tsunami it sent into motion.  At a press conference for Endgame, producer Kevin Feige talked about that first film. “As we were making the movie and as we were looking at dailies and as we were looking at effects tests coming in, we realized that this was really going to be special and even perhaps more special than we thought.” He added, “There started to be a much bigger sort of wind behind our back.”  Heroes previously unknown to the general public are now household names.  The relationship between a talking raccoon and a walking tree have become part of the world’s shared culture.

Avengers: Endgame is a must see for any fan of the Marvel films.  And while it closes one chapter of the Marvel universe, a new one is beginning.  Heroes like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange will welcome new allies as they continue the legacy begun with Iron Man and the Avengers.
