If rumor and conjecture were physical things we’d have enough to fill a Star Destroyer when it comes to Star Wars: Episode IX. What we don’t have, however, are actual facts regarding the production. Lucasfilm hasn’t released a trailer yet, and J.J. Abrams has been his typical, tight-lipped self when it comes to confirming details. Adam Driver, on the other hand, may have just confirmed one of the many rumors we’ve heard.

Rian Johnson’s readily admitted that he wanted to subvert expectations with The Last Jedi. A severe backlash to the film followed, as did Johnson’s seemingly endless stream of explanations for his interpretation of Star Wars.  That led fans to wonder if J.J. Abrams would make a course correction with Epidode IX to bring the sequel trilogy back on track with his original vision. Adam Driver, in a recent interview, seems to suggest that.

Adam Drive Talks Kylo Ren

It seems Adam Driver, a/k/a Kylo Ren, has known all along what fate has in store to for the Darth Vader-adoring Sith acolyte he portrays. According to comicbook.com, the actor has always had “one piece of information” that has helped guide his acting and the character’s progression. In an interview with Deadline, Driver expounded on the subject:

“With Star Wars, I had one piece of information on where it was all going, and that’s where it has been in my head for a long time, and things were building towards that.”

That “one piece of information” has aided Adam Driver in developing his character and moving Kylo Ren towards a specific goal. He remained silent as to the nature of the information or the goal. However, noting that he’s known this since the beginning basically confirms that J.J. Abrams is readjusting the trilogy back to the original plan.

Of course, it’s hard to say whether or not Rian Johnson stayed true when it came to the original intent for the Kylo Ren character. Of the myriad of things he’s found it necessary to explain, that’s not one of them. But examine Adam Driver’s words: things “were” building towards a certain goal, and they’re now “…working towards something in particular with that character”. If that piece of information has been there all along, that means Episode IX returns to the vision J.J. Abrams had for the sequel trilogy beginning with The Force Awakens. (I.e. the vision for the trilogy before The Last Jedi.)

With any luck we’ll get a teaser trailer soon. We likely won’t discover Adam Driver’s “piece of information”, though, until Episode IX hits theaters in December.
