Now before I get into discussion about 20th Century Fox’s Underwater, you have to understand that I have a deep love for sci-fi and monster movies. My hat comes off to any filmmaker moving the genres forward. In a world filled with “franchise” films, it’s refreshing to know some in this industry are still willing to take risks, and to take a chance on a difficult and original project.

That all being said…. Underwater did not disappoint. The film starts off with a bang and moves with a pretty heavy pace to the finish line. It’s a fun movie, packed with intense scenes, well placed jump scares and quality performances from the cast.

Underwater “follows a crew of underwater researchers who must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory.” The film stars Kristen Stewart (the Twilight series) , T.J. Miller (Deadpool), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan; Oceans 12)and John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane). William Eubank directs to popcorn-fun perfection.

Alien influence on Underwater

It’s hard not to mention Ridley Scott’s Alien when talking about Underwater. The influence on Eubank is obvious. It almost feels like a deep sea remake of the classic thriller. And honestly? That’s not a bad thing. To this reviewer, it is most obvious with Kristen Stewart performance as lead character Norah Price. Whether intentional or not, it’s a nice nod to Sigourney Weaver’s legendary Ellen Ripley. This role gives audiences a chance to view the actress in a whole new light.

T.J. Miller’s time on screen provides some excellent comic relief in a manner that is very T.J. Miller. Vincent Cassel is strong in his role as expected, as is ‎Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist). But, it’s the overall filmmaking achievements of Underwater, however, that are most impressive. Challenging, fully submerged sets and scuba diving performers in 100 pound deep sea diving suits did not make for an easy production. This was no small feat for any member of this cast and crew.

All in all, Underwater is a well made, action packed creature feature. While it might not achieve the grandeur and success of Alien, it’s still a great movie that you should go see. So, if science fiction and monster movies are your thing, this is your weekend pick. If you’re a fan of the genre, let Hollywood know that we want more!
