Michael Cuesta, who directed Daredevil: Born Again‘s second and third episodes recently shared some light on what the series could have looked like before some of the creative changes were made behind the scenes. The show has already premiered on Disney+ and is seeing viewers flock to it. Critically, the series is also getting rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Cuesta directed two of the most pivotal episodes of the series, but they could have been even more pivotal to the series. He sat down with Brandon Davis of Phase Hero and talked about some of the changes.

“It came to me from the producers and the writers. It was the first two episodes originally. I don’t know if these are things that I should say. It came to me originally as the pilot and the second episode.”

The first episode was added later on in the creative process, which does shift some of the attention to those two episodes in the overall narrative of the series. There’s also a massive tease at the end of the third episode that sets up the rest of the series. For those that haven’t watched episode three, you might want to avert your eyes.

The big Punisher moment at the end of the third episode comes out of nowhere, but BD asked if he was originally in the first two episodes at one point. Here’s what Michael had to say.

“I can’t really comment because I’m not that familiar with that story, where that went because certain things changed. The Punisher character was actually in the early scripts but it got reworked.”

Finally, he had a good amount to say about what drew him to these episodes as opposed to some others in the season.

“What I really liked about it was it was rooted in the real of New York, New York politics, the courtroom, law. I’ve never done a series that had three lawyers talking in a conference room. I never did anything like that and I’m not sure I would want to do that kind of thing but this wasn’t just that. The fact that this has the other side of the Daredevil character of someone who works the streets, sometimes at night, that’s what I’m drawn to.”
