Three large DC Studios projects are being moved to the backburner. Waller, Swamp Thing, and The Authority have faced some headwinds in development. James Gunn and Peter Safran hosted a massive DC Studios event last week. Phase Hero’s Brandon Davis broke down what’s happening with all of the DC titles and more in a new video.
Gunn told the gathered media that Swamp Thing has been in a holding pattern as James Mangold continued the awards tour for A Complete Unknown. Waller‘s story had to be reshuffled as the writing team tried to crack the story for that Viola Davis-led series. The DC Studios head said it’s been “a bumpy road.”
The Authority is something else entirely as the scale of such a movie has led to some challenges. Both Safran and Gunn admitted that there are a lot of morally grey heroes out there in their comments. DC Studios priorities like The Brave and the Bold & Paradise Lost have taken priority in the meantime. (After all, Batman and Wonder Woman are absolutely bigger draws for a casual audience than any of these projects.)
What’s Going On With The Authority?
“Honestly, Authority’s been the one that’s been the hardest,” Gunn says. “Both because of the shifting overall story and because of getting it right in a world with The Boys and a world with all the things that Authority influenced that came out after it.”
He continued, “And also having a lot of characters that we’ve fallen in love with that we’ve already filmed and have that we want to continue their stories and see them meet each other. So, I will admittedly say, it’s a little bit more on the backburner right now.”
