You know the saying “Everything’s bigger in Texas?” Well, B.J. Novak’s Vengeance takes that to heart, unveiling a story that keeps getting bigger the further you get into it.

Stay with me here: the story begins with Novak’s character Ben traveling from NYC to Texas for a funeral. A girl he was hooking up with died of an opioid overdose – and apparently, her family thought the two of them were a lot more serious than they were. Not only that, when Ben arrives in Texas, he learns the family’s convinced her death was actually a murder. There’s no evidence of that, but it gives Ben an idea. He’ll join the investigation, and turn the whole thing into a podcast about how conspiracy theories get started.

Except once Ben starts investigating, things don’t exactly go as planned. Maybe there is evidence of foul play here.

Either way, the story’s a lot bigger than expected.
