It looks like DC Studios is taking the Green Lantern “in brightest day” motto seriously, because things have never looked brighter for the color-coded space cops on the silver screen. Between a disastrous 2011 live-action film and cut Snyderverse plans, things were looking bleak for fans of one of the Justice League’s most iconic heroes… but not anymore. In a press event on Friday, DC Studios co-head James Gunn gave new details about the state of the forthcoming DCU slate, including a surprise that should make Green Lantern fans very happy.

As part of the updates, Gunn noted that DC intends to release seven DCU projects a year: two live-action feature films, one animated, and four TV series (half live-action, half animated). Lanterns, an HBO series featuring famed Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, was already on the docket and began shooting last week in Los Angeles. At the press event, Gunn announced that one of the animated series would be “My Adventures with Green Lantern,” a series in the same universe as “My Adventures with Superman.” Per DC’s announcement:
‘“My Adventures with Green Lantern,” will follow high school student Jessica Cruz who has her life upended when, according to an official logline, “a Green Lantern Power Ring falls from the sky” and chooses Cruz “to be its champion.” Things get even worse “when more debris from the Lanterns’ ancient space war arrives – along with their alien foes.” Jake Wyatt is executive producing, and Stephanie Gonzaga is a co-executive producer.’
Jessica Cruz’s first full appearance was in Justice League (vol. 2) #31 (Aug. 2014), when Power Ring, the evil Crime Syndicate Lantern of Earth 3, dies. Cruz inherits his Ring of Volthoom, a ring that feeds off fear instead of willpower, forcing Cruz to wear it and beginning Cruz’s long history of redemption. She’s a fascinating character whose introduction can allow a window into interesting sections of DC’s deep Lantern lore. As far as “ancient Lantern space lore’ goes, the Lanterns have as many longstanding enemies as you’d expect for a fleet of space police: other lantern corps or the manhunters could fit the bill, but the First Lantern, Volthoom, would be a mighty foe and a great intro to Lantern lore.
