Captain America: Brave New World was unsurprisingly the number one movie at the box office; while Paddington In Peru made a sizable dent in the box office.

Captain America: Brave New World Soars to the Top

Captain America: Brave New World

As per Box Office Mojo, the box office saw a strong performance this weekend as Captain America: Brave New World easily claimed the top spot with an impressive $88.5 million debut. This was well above the targeted amounts, and well above my predictions. The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe drew in eager fans, proving that the superhero franchise still has plenty of box office power. While not the highest opening for a Captain America film, its solid start isn’t indicative of its staying power, however. The film is getting negative reviews, which may impact its drop-off in the coming weeks.

Paddington Returns with Charm

Coming in at a distant second, Paddington in Peru delivered a respectable $13 million. The beloved bear’s latest adventure resonated with families, and strong reviews could help it sustain momentum. With little competition in the family-friendly market, it has room to grow through word-of-mouth.

Heart Eyes Sees A Boost

In its second weekend, Heart Eyes moved from second to third place but saw an impressive 20% increase, earning $10 million. Likely benefiting from the Valentine’s Day crowd, the romantic horror film continues to draw interest. If this momentum holds, it could have strong staying power in the weeks ahead.

The Rest of the Box Office

Dog Man continued its strong run, bringing in $9.7 million and slipping to fourth place. The family-friendly animated hit remains a steady performer, proving that audiences still love the crime-fighting canine. Meanwhile, the Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2 rounded out the top five with a $7.2 million debut. While its domestic numbers are modest, strong international performance could make it a major global success.

Next Week’s Box Office Predictions

The major new release next week is Osgood Perkin’s The Monkey.

The movie is targeting a $17 million to $25 million opening. The marketing for the film has kicked into high gear, and it has name recognition with Perkins and James Wan behind the camera. I could see it being on the higher end, most likely in and around $22 million.

I don’t think it’ll be enough to be first. Captain America: Brave New World would have to drop off by over 75% to be knocked out of first place. While reviews for the movie aren’t positive, I’m not sure it’s enough to make the movie drop that much. More than likely, the movie will drop 60% and land in the mid-30 million range; but it’s really going to depend how the movie does this week.

As always we’ll find out next week.
