Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie took to social media on Tuesday afternoon to clarify his comments which have gone viral on social media. The Sam Wilson actor was participating in a Q&A earlier in the week where he was asked what the Captain America moniker represents. “Captain America represents a lot of different thing,” Mackie said. “I don’t think the term America should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity.”
The response blew up on social media, with people taking to their timelines to express their dismay over Mackie thinking Captain America doesn’t represent America. Of course, Captain America has to represent America in some capacity, it’s literally in his name. However, much like Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) showed in his MCU journey through titles like Captain America: Civil War, it’s more about what the United States of America is meant to represent than the country itself. This is exactly what Sam Wilson seems to be wrestling with when Brave New World hits theaters, as his teaming with President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) already sees the two addressing that Sam’s idea of what’s right might not align with the President’s.
“Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American & taking on the shield of a hero like [Captain America] is the honor of a lifetime,” Mackie said in a post on his Instagram story. “I have the utmost respect for those who serve & have served our country. Cap has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”
It seems entirely possible, if not plausible, that this is exactly what Mackie meant at the Q&A and could’ve have chosen a few other words to convey it more accurately. Now, his full sentiment is out there, even though it doesn’t necessarily need to be as the actor is not only entitled to his own perspective and opinion but seemed to have meant this in the first place. As seen in responses to the tweet above capturing the story Mackie shared, many fans seem to believe the actor did not need to clarify his words.
Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14.
