Celebrity obsessions, pop culture icons, and cult dynamics collide in the upcoming A24 thriller Opus

The film sees a young writer, Ariel (The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri), drawn into the fray of Moretti (John Malkovich), an iconic musician who vanished decades ago and suddenly resurfaces. But Ariel soon finds something more sinister at work than just catchy pop earworms.

Here’s the official synopsis from A24:

A young writer (Ayo Edebiri) is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star (John Malkovich) who mysteriously disappeared thirty years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan.

In addition to Edebiri and Malkovich, Opus also stars Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino, and Tatanka Means. The film comes from writer and director Mark Anthony Green.

The trailer debuted today ahead of the film’s world premiere at Sundance Film Festival. It will later hit theaters on March 14.
