Prime Video is going all in on MGM’s film library. Variety is reporting that the Robocop TV series has landed a new writer and team of producers. Peter Ocko has joined up with the production as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. James Wan is also set to executive produce under his Atomic Monster banner.
Here’s the official logline from Amazon MGM Studios.
“A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine.”
Michael Clear and Rob Hackett will also executive produce the series alongside Danielle Bozzone. This series has been in the works for quite a while, since Amazon acquired MGM. The plan all along has been for Amazon to mine the MGM library for IP that they can use for future films and TV. Along the same lines, they’re producing a Legally Blonde prequel series, and a show based on the Poltergeist films.
What Is Robocop?
Robocop is a fan-favorite science fiction series that started in 1987 with the first film from Paul Verhoeven. It starred Peter Weller and Nancy Allen. That movie kicked off a trilogy and several TV series/mini-series. There was also a 2014 reboot that starred Joel Kinnaman. The most recent entry was the video game Robocop: Rogue City.
The first film was a commentary on the state of policing and violence in the United States at the time. It was cartoonishly violent. As the series went on, it became more and more tame, with Robocop 3 as a low point.
