Since the game launched one year ago, Disney fans have embraced Lorcana all over the world. The trading card game from Ravensburger has sold over 1 billion cards, racked up over 400,000 downloads of the Lorcana app, and welcomed over 100,000 players to more than 76,000 organized play events. To celebrate these massive milestones, key members of the Lorcana team including co-creators Ryan Miller and Steve Warner took the stage for the “Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game: Past, Present, Future” panel at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event this past weekend. And in front of a packed house, the panelists made a number of amazing announcements that have players incredibly hyped for what’s to come.
This D23 panel was scheduled on the day when the game’s latest set, Shimmering Skies, was released in local game stores and Disney Parks. However, as excited as Illumineers are to add these cards to their decks and collections, the announcements extended beyond the latest release. For starters, it was announced that the currently unnamed sixth set will drop in November 2024. Those in attendance were shown a sneak peek of new cards featuring pirate-themed Glimmers of Mickey Mouse and his friends. Although, the crowd became much more spirited when it was revealed that characters from Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers would be introduced to Lorcana for the first time as part of the sixth set.
The panel also revealed that characters from The Black Cauldron and Pocahontas will be joining the beloved detectives from the Disney Afternoon block of programming in the game in 2025 and 2026 respectively. The final tease takes Lorcana to 2026 (and potentially to infinity) and beyond as the panelists shared that work has begun to integrate Pixar franchises into the game as well. Could this mean that Lucasfilm and Marvel characters are also on their way eventually? Only time will tell.
As players anxiously await those much-anticipated releases, the panel also focused on new developments for organized play. First, they introduced Disney Lorcana Quest, a different way for players to engage with the game through social, cooperative, and multiplayer offerings. One of the results of this new initiative will be autograph-ready cards that fans could bring to the Disney Parks and have them signed by the respective characters. Then, as the culmination of the previously announced Disney Lorcana Challenge regional events (including the upcoming ones scheduled for Toronto, Las Vegas, Birmingham, and Seattle), the European Championship will take place at the Disneyland Paris Resort in December while the North American Championship follows in January 2025 at the Disneyland Resort.
These tournaments will then lead to the Disney Lorcana Challenge World Championship, which will take over the Walt Disney World Resort in 2025. Complete details for these three events will be announced at a later date. However, while attendees at the grand finale will receive a special edition of A Whole New World with all-new expanded artwork, the panel shared that the players who earned their spots at Worlds will compete for a highly-coveted, one-of-one golden version of Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor.
Fresh off the heels of another awesome appearance at D23, there are so many exciting things in store for the future of Lorcana.
