Glitter & Doom is the newest jukebox musical to appear on our screens, and it is certainly one not to be missed. This musical presents a gay love story set to the music of The Indigo Girls.

The film tells the story of a dark and twisty singer/songwriter (Alan Cammish) who has difficulty getting close to people and a bright and shiny aspiring clown (Alex Diaz) who gets close to just about everyone. However, he is always hiding behind the persona he has built. 

GLITTER & DOOM TELLS A TRUE LOVE STORY

Typically, when telling a LGBTQ+ story, love story, etc it leans into gay trauma porn love stories. These stories are always about someone who isn’t out so it causes struggles in the relationship. Or it’s a story about someone who’s estranged from their family because they’re gay and find love. Or name any other tragic queer trope. Glitter & Doom, however, isn’t those stories. 

This love story isn’t about infatuation. It’s also not about coming to terms with who you are. It’s not just about sexual attraction. Glitter & Doom is a story about love and finding the person that compliments you. Finding the person who sees the glitter behind your doom and allows you to see the doom behind their glitter. 

JUKEBOX MUSICAL MAGIC

Opinions on jukebox musicals tend to be polarized, with people either loving or hating them. As far as this one goes, I really enjoyed it. The film skillfully integrates the songs and dance numbers into the narrative without disrupting the flow of the story. Instead, the lyrics of the Indigo Girls serve as a powerful tool to propel the story forward in a remarkable manner. Both Diaz and Cammish were great with lovely voices. Their chemistry never felt forced, and they sang the heck out of the songs. 

On top of all this, the rest of the cast is a veritable “Who’s Who” of the queer community. There are plenty of cameos from Ann Burrell, Tig Navarro, Peppermint, and even the Indigo Girls themselves hopping into the story. 

I truly enjoyed this film and definitely think you should give this one a watch when it comes out on March 8, 2024!
