A new Chicken Run is hitting Netflix with Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. No, you’re not imagining things. Netflix is producing and distributing a sequel to a 23-year-old movie. The first Chicken Run is an entertaining movie and was showered with praise and accolades. It wasn’t a movie that most people would argue generally needed a sequel.
I was certainly one of those people who figured the movie didn’t need any sort of sequel or continuation, but after having seen Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget; I can tell you that it’s an entertaining watch. Even if it’s not exactly the most memorable.
Picking Up Where Chicken Run Left Off
The movie picks up sometime after the original film ends. It doesn’t undo or change much from that original film’s ending. Ginger, Rooster, and the rest of the chickens are hiding in a secluded island sanctuary. They avoid the mainland, out of fear for their safety. However, when Ginger and Rooster’s child, Molly, leaves their secluded island. It’s up to the crew to get her back.
The plot doesn’t do anything interesting or exciting that truly blew my mind or honestly made me think a sequel was warranted. The movie is instead relying on the moment-to-moment jokes and gags. For the most part, these are pretty entertaining. So while the overall plot wasn’t the most exciting or engaging, I did find myself entertained with the antics of the chickens.
New Cast Joins The Hen House
There are some notable cast changes. Thandiwe Newton (Westworld, Mission: Impossible II) replaces Julia Sawalha as Ginger; and Zachary Levi (Shazam!, Chuck) replaces Mel Gibson as the voice of Rocky. Both of these replacements work, and I didn’t notice any huge notable difference in performance. The biggest addition is Bella Ramsey (The Last Of Us, Game Of Thrones) as Molly. Who brings strength and youthful energy to the film.
Conclusion
The filmmakers do an admirable job of making a sequel to a 23-year-old film. Some might question the need for such a sequel, but the moment-to-moment gags and laughs justified the film’s existence enough for me. While the plot itself is somewhat dull and predictable, it had me mostly enjoying this one as a fun, albeit probably just a one-time watch.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget hatches on Netflix on December 15th, 2023.
