Five Nights At Freddy’s Holds Box Office Lead This Weekend Despite Huge Dropoff

Despite a huge dropoff at the weekend box office, Five Nights At Freddy’s still maintained the number one spot this weekend.

Low Returns For Five Nights At Freddy’s At The Box Office

As per Box Office Mojo, Five Nights at Freddy’s opened in 100+ more theatres compared to its opening weekend. However, it still lost nearly 76% of its box office from the previous week; bringing in approximately $19.4 Million. Still, the movie had a $20 Million budget and has grossed over $217 Million worldwide. So despite its huge dropoff, it’s still considered a success for Universal. Which also debuted the movie day-and-date with its streaming service, Peacock. While there’s no confirmation, repeat viewers are likely seeing the movie on Peacock, and that could be contributing to its decline from last week.

Low Box Office Weekend For Everyone Else

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour managed to land in the second place spot with $13.5 Million. The concert film has grossed $231 Million to date. Similarly to Five Nights at Freddy’s the movie had a relatively low budget of $10-$20 Million so it’s considered a huge success for the pop artist.

Killers of the Flower Moon maintained its third-place spot, bringing in $7 Million.

Priscilla opened in 1,300 more theatres from its debut last week and brought in a respectable $5 Million in the fourth-place spot. A24 tends to open its movies through a gradual release, opening slowly but surely in more theatres. Compared to their tentpole release last year, The Whale, Priscilla is opening on a larger scale than A24 tends to do, but it’s clearly paying off for them. Whether it can sustain its success over the next few weeks will remain uncertain, but it’s a strategy that’s seemingly working thus far for A24.

In the fifth place spot was the debut of the movie, Radical, which brought in $2.7 Million.

How Will The Marvels Do Next Weekend?

The Marvels is tracking for a $50-75 Million debut, which sounds reasonable enough; and it’ll likely be in the top spot. However, almost 80% of MCU movies have opened to a $100-$150 Million debut. Even Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened to a $106 Million debut, and that movie was generally considered a financial disappointment for Marvel and Disney.

While tracking numbers are predictive and not indicative of what the final numbers will be. Marvel has had a lot of issues facing this film. This includes the ongoing strikes and the effect they have on the marketing for this film. There’s also the most recent Variety expose which painted a not great picture behind the scenes for Marvel and Disney.

What could help this movie is if reviews come out generally positive, and there’s also word-of-mouth about particular multiversal cameos in the movie’s post-credits scene. So that could help to develop and build some rapport with audiences. Still, it’s looking like The Marvels will have a tough fight at next weekend’s box office.
