Netflix’s One Piece sailed onwards success worthy of the Grand Line when it weighed anchor and set sail on August 31, 2023. Critics and fans alike love it, and it’s already one of the best live-action adaptations of any anime in history. So much so that the cast and crew want to commemorate that success with a behind-the-scenes video giving us a look at how they made this Netflix series. Netflix’s One Piece: Inside the Sets ~ Details
Netflix has just released a behind-the-scenes (or rather, behind the sets) video for their live-action adaptation of One Piece on YouTube. As its name suggests, this Inside the Sets video details almost all of the sets the cast move and fight around in Netflix’s One Piece. Granted, not all of the sets made it into this video. Noticeably, Arlong Park and Coco Village didn’t make it in, and Vice-Admiral Garp’s flagship also got left out. Everything aside though? It’s all there.
This Inside the Sets video details the design process behind Alvida’s Miss Love Duck, Buggy’s Big Top-based circus tent, the floating restaurant Baratie, the interior of Kara’s mansion (which the manga definitely did not show), and even the Straw Hat Pirates’ own Going Merry. Netflix even gives us a partial explanation as to why the goat figurehead is whitewashed, and thus not true to its canon color scheme. Apparently, showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda felt that it would’ve looked too “goofy” to have the figurehead in the Netflix show as is. So instead, they made the figurehead a laughing goat as a compromise of sorts. I get the sentiment there. However, I also feel that it still would’ve looked great painted. It’s just my opinion on the matter though.
