We’re all just Barbie Girls, living in a Barbie world. Yes, once again Barbie proved to be a powerhouse at the box office this weekend.
As per Box Office Mojo, Despite dropping 43% from its previous week’s box office, the movie still made $53 million this weekend. The movie has now grossed over $1 Billion worldwide at the box office. Warner Bros. Discovery must be happy, though as they are the distributor of the two highest-grossing movies this weekend.
The Newcomers
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem did technically gross more than Meg 2: The Trench as it opened on Wednesday, August 2nd. Mutant Mayhem made $43 Million between Wednesday and Sunday; but only made $28 Million of that $43 Million over the weekend itself which was slightly less than Meg 2, which made $30 Million and grabbed the second-place spot. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem overall placed fourth.
Reported budgets for Meg 2: The Trench is $129 million; and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is $70 million. Depending on how the movies fare in the next two weeks and beyond, they are likely going to make their budget back and potentially more.
In our review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem; reviewer Hunter Bolding said:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sets a new bar for Turtles movies. It captures the essence of what long-time fans love about the characters but gives them plenty of new wrinkles for younger and first-time fans seeing the film. The animation style is vibrant and pops off the screen. It’s like a trippy surrealist painting at times, but it all blends together for the best Ninja Turtles movie so-far.
In our review of Meg 2: The Trench; reviewer Junior Felix said:
The theater I was in laughed so much during the film that it elevated it to one of the most fun times I’ve had in a theater for a while. DJ (a hilarious Page Kennedy), acknowledges the film he’s literally in by saying that the poisoned-tipped bullets in his gun are just like the ones in Jaws2. And if you were worried there aren’t any good one-liners in this film, don’t worry. We get a “See you later, CHUM”. Chef’s Kiss!
In a time where we have great serious, thought-provoking films out in theaters, it’s great to have a silly, hilarious action-filled film that’s a welcomed relief.
Some Other Returning Players
Oppenheimer was in the 3rd place spot; and while it’s been steadily dropping at the box office, it still made a respectable $28.7 Million this past weekend.
Disney’s Haunted Mansion saw the most significant drop off from last week with a 62.7% drop over its opening weekend. The movie brought in only $8.9 Million this past weekend and landed in the 5th place spot.
On The Horizon
Next weekend will see the release of Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Seeing how it fares against more family-friendly content like Barbie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be interesting. As always, we’ll check in and see how things fared.
