Barbie director Greta Gerwig is set to direct a new adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia books for Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter was first on the news.

While no official announcement has been made, it has long been rumored that Gerwig would work with the streamer. It is alleged that the Ladybird director has made a deal to direct two films in C.S. Lewis’ iconic Narnia franchise.

A recent New Yorker profile confirmed that “she has a deal with Netflix to write and direct at least two films based on C S Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia – but she wasn’t likely to make another movie about a toy.” Gerwig adds: “It would have to be something that has some strange hook in me, that feels like it goes to the marrow.”

Netflix announced its multi-year deal with the C.S. Lewis Company back in October 2018. The streamer later enlisted Coco co-writer Matthew Aldrich as the “creative architect” overseeing the development of all the movies and TV shows adapted from C.S. Lewis’ beloved novels.

Ted Sarandos said at the time. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.” But since that 2018 acquisition, the streamer has yet to announce any projects, casting, or dates relating to the fantasy series.

Before Netflix acquired the rights to the C.S. Lewis novels, Disney adapted The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005 starring Tilda Swinton and James McAvoy, and Prince Caspian in 2008. Fox later released The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010. Although the trio of movies was well received, they were met with increasingly diminishing box office returns.

There were plans for a fourth movie, The Silver Chair, with Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston attached. It never made it into production. The production company Walden Media let its rights to the series lapse in 2018 with Netflix snatching them up.

The seven novels in the series, which were published in the 1950s, tell the story of the White Witch’s attempts to take over Narnia. The Chronicles of Narnia follows a group of four children who are evacuated to the English countryside during WWII. The seven-book fantasy series follows their adventures in the imaginary kingdom of Narnia, guided by a talking lion named Aslan, as they fight evil and try to restore the throne to its rightful line.
