In what’s an eerie repeat of 2018, we had a Transformers movie going up against a Spider-verse movie; now in 2018 there was also Aquaman that same week, and in a week we’ll have The Flash; but still eerily similar lineup to December 2018.

As per Box Office Mojo, similar to 2018, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse saw a 54% drop in its Box Office revenue from last week; similar to Into The Spider-Verse‘s 53% drop, but considering that Across the Spider-Verse debuted at a stronger $120 Million compared to Into The Spider-Verse‘s $35 Million, it had a stronger footing against Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Rise of the Beasts still came out on top, bringing in $60.5 Million against Across The Spider-verse’s $55.4 Million. With only $5 Million separating the two, it’s clear that people were having a tough time deciding on which to see or seeing both.

With both movies directly setting up sequels, their box office success means that we’ll most likely get those sequels; which I’m sure fans of either film will be happy about.

Through it all, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is as close to a perfect sequel as you can get. It feels very much like The Empire Strikes Back in all the best ways. It’s dark, and dreary, but still retains that level of hope that you felt from the first film. This story retains what made that first film special, but blows it out of the water with an expansion of Spider-Man mythology and animation style.

If this is the direction that the Transformers movies are heading in, we’re in for a good stretch. The film might have some issues with exposition and melodrama, but it more than makes up for it with some excellent action set pieces and strong performances across the board. For fans that have been clamoring for the live-action debut of Unicron, he’s here, and he’s terrifying. The Maximals, in their limited time, are awesome. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts sheds the skin of Michael Bay-led over-bloated films from the past and takes the series into a new interesting direction.

Transformers Rise Of The Beasts Poster

Disney movies rounded out the Top 5 with The Little Mermaid, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Boogeyman rounding out the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place spots respectively.

Don’t count Disney out quite yet as next weekend sees the release of the newest Pixar film, Elemental. We also are seeing the release of The Flash, although that movie is tracking quite poorly. So we’ll have to see how it fares against a pretty strong box office at the moment.
