The most iconic doll is shaping up to be the most iconic movie of the summer. Check out the latest trailer for a sneak peek at Barbie below.
Plot details about the flick from Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig remain scarce. However, Warner Bros. did reveal a little more about the film today. The new trailer includes the following description:
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
In addition to the trailer, the studio dropped a ton of new character posters, featuring many faces of the star-studded cast. The posters confirm earlier rumors and speculation that the film features a number of different Barbies and Kens. A few posters also declare that some characters are human. That combined with the “Real World” road sign from the trailer seems to indicate we’ll travel between “Barbie Land” and the world as we know it in the movie.
Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as our “primary” Barbie and Ken. The extended cast also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, Jamie Demetriou, Connor Swindells, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ritu Arya, Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Dua Lipa, and Oscar winner Helen Mirren.
In addition to its numerous stars in front of the camera, Barbie boasts an impressive creative team. The screenplay comes from Oscar nominees Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. The film’s director of photography Rodrigo Prieto (The Irishman, Brokeback Mountain) and production designer Sarah Greenwood (Beauty and the Beast, Anna Karenina) are also Oscar nominees. Plus, the Oscar winners Jacqueline Durran (Little Women) and Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel) work on the film’s costumes and score respectively.
Barbie will officially premiere in theaters nationwide on July 21. Until then, check back to THS for more updates.
