Blumhouse and Universal Pictures’ upcoming reboot of The Exorcist just landed a big rising star. Deadline reports Lidya Jewett has joined the cast.
If the young actor seems familiar, that’s because she already has more than 15 film and TV credits. She played the lead in Sam Raimi’s Nightbooks and the Ivy + Bean series on Netflix. Jewett also appeared in Hidden Figures, Black Panther, Good Girls, and Grey’s Anatomy, among others.
Jewett joins previously announced cast members Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd. Ellen Burstyn will also appear, reprising her Exorcist role as Chris MacNeil. Though the casting announcement didn’t delve into Jewett’s role specifically, it seems likely she’ll be the new flick’s equivalent of Regan. (Pea soup, anyone?)
The upcoming reboot comes from director David Gordon Green, who successfully brought back the Halloween franchise in recent years. Though the film’s production briefly went on hiatus, it has since resumed. The movie currently remains on track for release this October.
The original 1973 film The Exorcist stands as a staple of the horror genre. It brought in over $441 million worldwide – making it the highest domestic-grossing horror movie ever. It also landed 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Burstyn and Best Picture. (The Exorcist was also the first ever horror movie to land a Best Picture nomination.)
