Velma made its debut on HBO Max and was immediately divisive. It received plenty of negative reviews and is the lowest-rated animated series in the history of IMDB. Despite all of that review bombing, it’s proven to be incredibly popular on HBO Max. Parrot Analytics reports that the series has remained in the top 10 programs streamed on the service from its premiere. It also has jumped in demand by 127% this week.

Velma has surpassed The Last Of Us and is just behind shows like Wednesday in demand.

So this one proves once again, that even if “fans” want to review bomb something and people want to talk bad about it on Twitter, any press is good press, and algorithms don’t care about negative reviews. The series takes the classic Scooby-Doo characters and makes a different spin on the series. On the show, there’s no Scooby-Doo, Mindy Kaling voices Velma, and Shaggy is now Norville. It has a more adult-slant to the comedy as well. The voice cast is filled with all-stars like Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, Constance Wu, Jane Lynch, Russell Peters, Wanda Sykes, Gary Cole, and Frank Welker.

Here’s what Mindy Kaling had to say about critics of the show.

“Hopefully, you noticed my Velma is South Asian. If people freak out about that, I don’t care,” Kaling told audience members. “Nobody ever complained about a talking dog solving mysteries so I don’t think they’ll be upset over a brown Velma.”

There’s even talk of a crossover with Harley Quinn at some point. Both are adult shows with violence and sexual humor. It might work. We’ll have to see. The next two episodes of Velma were released on HBO Max recently.
