It seems Makoto Shinkai is already making headlines on the international stage with Suzume even before its official global debut. I mean, what else do you call it when his latest anime film masterpiece is making its debut early at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival? Or as most people call it: Berlinale.

An Early Bell-Ringing at Berlin?

As reported by Crunchyroll, the official Twitter account of Suzume no Tojimari (or just Suzume as we know it globally) has just announced that it’s heading to the 73rd Berlinale. Apparently, this latest anime film masterpiece from acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai (The Garden of Words, Your Name, Weathering with You) is so good that even Berlinale wants to show it off.

This is even more significant since this year’s Berlinale will be the first time a Berlinale has had an anime film premiere in it in just over 20 years. The last time this happened was during the 52nd Berlinale in 2002, when Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro) won one of the two Golden Bears awarded for that year. Note that the Golden Bear is the highest possible prize at Berlinale, and is quite adorable to boot. This should really tell you just how good Suzume is.

So if you have the money to fly all the way to Berlin, Germany; then that might be your day. Or rather, days. The 73rd Berlinale will take place from February 16, 2023 to February 26, 2023 in a 10-day event. Unfortunately, there’s no information as to which day will feature Suzume. Until we get that info, you’re just going to have to attend all 10 days to see this latest Makoto Shinkai anime film masterpiece.

If you have neither the time nor the money (or the ability to speak German), then you can also watch Suzume during its global debut just a few months later. For us here in NA (as well as Austria, Belgium, Gibraltar, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom), that will be on April 14, 2023. It’s probably easier for you to just watch this anime film in your local theater anyways. Unfortunately, tickets are not yet on sale in the NA as of this writing.
