The movie that (re)popularized pottery making and “Unchained Melody” might make a comeback. Apparently, Channing Tatum is interested in remaking Ghost.
The 1990 film gained fame for its steamy supernatural romance between Demi Moore’s Molly and Patrick Swayze’s Sam – who happens to be a ghost, lingering to warn his love of impending danger. The movie also starred Whoopi Goldberg as the psychic helping connect the two. (Goldberg even won an Academy Award for her role.)
While discussing his upcoming role in Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Tatum mentioned to Vanity Fair the project was on the table. His production company, Free Association, currently has the rights to Ghost. They’re working on developing a remake, with Tatum potentially taking on the Patrick Swayze role.
However, it’s still a work in progress, needing updating for modern audiences to address the stereotypes and problematic elements of the 1990 original.
“We’re going to do something different,” Tatum told Vanity Fair. “I think it needs to change a little bit…”
The original Ghost was hugely popular during its time. It brought in over $500 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of the year. In addition to Goldberg’s win, the film landed Oscar noms for Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay (which it won).
So, could Tatum take Ghost to even new heights, over 30 years later? The actor implied the potential remake is still in its earliest stages at this point. So for now, we’ll have to wait and see where this one goes.
