In one of the quickest turnarounds for a novel being adapted to screen, F. Paul Wilson‘s book The Keep was published in 1981 and adapted for the screen by Michael Mann in 1983. That film, which was marred by studio interference, isn’t one of Mann’s favorites in his catalog. The film isn’t readily available on Blu-ray, and he’s all but disowned it.

Now, according to F. Paul Wilson’s Twitter, someone else is taking up the reigns for The Keep. Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead, Creepshow) has signed on for a remake of The Keep.

Nicotero is no stranger to big-budget horror flicks. He’s been a master effects artist turned filmmaker/producer.

For those that aren’t in tune with The Keep, here’s a quick synopsis.

When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve a problem in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps, the men find something that’s both powerful and terrifying. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims.

The Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore―who just happens to be Jewish―to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way―a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny. The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other…the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened

This is very exciting news for fans of the novel and maybe it’ll lead to a new Blu-ray/4K release of the original film as interest grows.
