It’s a little bit Truman Show, a little bit Black Swan, and a little bit Stepford Wives. Following its preview at CinemaCon, we now have a first look at Olivia Wilde’s feature Don’t Worry Darling.
The psychological thriller follows a 1950s housewife Alice (Florence Pugh) living with her husband Jack (Harry Styles) in a utopian experimental community. But the closer Alice begins to examine their lives and the community, the more she begins to worry Jack’s glamorous company may hide disturbing secrets.
Check out the trailer for Don’t Worry Darling below.
The trailer gives us a glimpse of that too-sunny cheerful 50s aesthetic. (You know, the kind that immediately gives you the sinking feeling things here are too good to be true.) We get a taste of Pugh’s Alice beginning to spiral as everyone around her appears to refuse to admit anything’s wrong. Based on this first look alone, Don’t Worry Darling definitely seems like one to watch.
Here’s the official synopsis from Warner Bros:
Alice (Pugh) and Jack (Styles) are lucky to be living in Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families. Life is perfect, with every resident’s needs met by the company. All they ask in return is unquestioning commitment to the Victory cause. But when cracks in their idyllic life begin to appear, exposing flashes of something much more sinister lurking beneath the attractive façade, Alice can’t help questioning what they’re doing in Victory, and why. Just how much is Alice willing to lose to expose what’s really going on in paradise?
The film comes from writer Katie Silberman. It marks Wilde’s second time directing a feature, following 2019’s Booksmart.
Don’t Worry Darling premieres in theaters September 23.
