Well, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to watch that Super Mario Bros. film. Heck, we’ll have to wait longer just to see what that film is actually called.
Super Mario Bros. A No-Go For Now
Deadline has just announced that the still-untitled Super Mario Bros. film from Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination will now see a delay in its release. Previously, the film was supposed to premiere in theaters on December 21, 2022. Just before Christmas, actually. Now the new release date is next year on April 7, 2023.
As you might have noticed, this would put this Super Mario Bros. film’s theatrical release right on Easter weekend. In fact, that’s what Universal is banking on for this release delay. They apparently want to take advantage of the Easter holiday to have more families watching this film in theaters. Apparently, Christmas wasn’t big enough for them? I would think that a Christmas release might have generated more numbers at the box office since it’s a bigger holiday than Easter, but what do I know?
This is pure speculation on my part, but I’m fairly certain that the delay is because the Super Mario Bros. film is just seeing delays in production. I mean, it doesn’t even have a title yet. Everyone is just calling the film the “Super Mario Bros. film” in the absence of any official title from Nintendo, Universal, or Illumination. At the very least, this release delay might allow them more time to make a better film. Again though, this is just pure speculation. Take it with a grain of salt until we hear anything official.
Puss in Boots: Taking a Short Catnap
In other news though, there is a film that will be taking the Super Mario Bros. film’s old release date of December 21, 2022. Apparently, that will be Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It seems this sequel to the surprisingly good 2011 spinoff to the Shrek films will be seeing a delay as well, since it was originally going to see a premiere on September 23, 2022. Hopefully, that means that we’ll get a better film due to the lengthened production time. Maybe. At the very least, we can hope that Universal replicates the success of the first Puss in Boots film. From what it looks like in the official trailer though, it does looks that way.
